The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Selling On Amazon And Ebay: Part One

Sites like eBay and Amazon are easily two of the biggest, and they present an earning opportunity for users as well. It’s not just about big businesses either – although some might argue that the eBay isn’t as well suited to the smaller seller these days – anyone can sign up and start selling.

In the first part of the article, I will look at the advantages and disadvantages of selling on Amazon.

THE POSITIVES

With Amazon, listing is free, the item remains on the site until sold, or until you take it off and you only have to add ISBN numbers etc.

to bring up the item that you wish to sell. It’s quick and easy to list, you get a notification the moment an item is side, and the money is then transferred to your bank account at scheduled intervals, usually fortnightly.

I find that sales on Amazon are more consistent than eBay, probably because of the set price, and people can just buy an item when they see rather than waiting for an auction to end. The fact that they have standard prices for postage is also good as it avoids disputes or low ratings over postage costs.

Payments are made direct to your bank, so once seller fees and postage fees are taken out whatever is left is

yours, and there are no additional transaction fees to pay.

THE NEGATIVES

While my experiences with Amazon have been positive overall, there are few negatives that I have found. You can’t list an item if it’s not in the catalogue so there is some limit to what you can sell on the site, while on eBay you can sell whatever you have to say provided it is within their terms and conditions.

The standard postage for some items does not cover the postage so you either have to reflect that in your starting price, which can make the item difficult to sell, or you have to take the hit and pay the additional postage out of your profits.

Other people’s experiences may be different than mine but I have not found many negatives selling on Amazon.
